Emerald Feathers by dittin03 Emerald Feathers by dittin03
*phew* I finally finished this one! I had no idea how I'd bring the small pheasant feathers into this one until I just sat down and did it.

:icondreamtides: commissioned this one from me, letting me run wild as long as I found a way to integrate the painting and feathers. I painted the griffin first, then added the wings, tail, and mane one tiny feather at a time.

It's got a really cool 3d look. Plus I added some metallic green and gold paint all over for a neat effect when you look at it from different angles, which also happens naturally in the feathers themselves.

The main body of the painting was done across 3 turkey tail feathers (12.5" x 6"), the mane, if you look close, has got 3 yellow pheasant feathers in it, the wing has a variety of pheasant feathers in it, and the end of the tail is a peacock tail feather with some very tiny blue pheasant feathers at its base. All of these (except the mane) were accented with the shiny green paint.

Very nice - I love the way other feathers are integrated into the painting itself!

It's kind of a mixed media piece, and I love those.

I don't think I ever looked at this one because it was so small ... I like it. The feathers put together with the paint on top of Another feather is just awesome.

Really? Yeah ... I was trying, but they don't have a clear section for that ... I tried specifying 11x14 inches and it didn't like it.

Yep, do some research first. That way, you can find one that will do what you are needing from a scanner. From there, you go bargain hunting :D

I've never seen anyone use multiple feathers for feather painting. Really awesome way to get a larger canvas, and it looks incredible! The feathers on top are a neat effect too. (I'm also a sucker for gryphons, which doesn't hurt. ;) )

Feathers split when you apply pressure don't they? You must be part avian to keep them preened. It's amazing to see an imagination at work. It's so envious.

Yes, they do split very easily. It's important to use a small brush and very little amounts of paint at a time. It's not only pressure that will split a feather, but also moisture. I try not to use much water when painting unless I have to for blending purposes. It's definitely something that comes with practice.

Hey hey... that turned out really nice. :D

You could probably do another one of these on a dreamcatcher.

nope, unless the dream-catcher is framed. I just do framed feathers: otherwise they are easily destroyed. I put far too much work into them for something like that unless the person commissioning the feather had paid for it to be that way.

Hahahaha! It is true! It is not enough to talk about something, when someone actually SEES it, then it becomes something tangible. A picture, it seems, really IS worth a thousand words!

And yes, I was hoping you were thinking along the lines of something to do with feathers and paint! :D

Awesome work, Kristan :'D I love the effect of the added feathers, particularly the tail - the peacock feather makes a wonderfully colourful contrast to the dark of the turkey feathers.

The mane is probably my favourite part. It just looks so fluffy!

Great job :';)

Aren't peacock feathers neat? They are like a zillion different colors and have their own unique designs. When I got to the tail there was no doubt that it would be a peacock feather to balance it all out. :D

I've always silently admired your work, but I must say, this piece has to be your best yet.

Just for the future, and this may just be me (and not to be a nit-pick or anything) but is the neck maybe a bit long? Either that, or just something strikes me as not right. If not, I'll just shut up =)

I think it's just the way the head is angled that makes the neck look a little long - and with the legs being sort of shorter, the neck is drawn into primary focus.

Good answer! But I did see something a little weird in the neck area too. And I did go back and fix it up so he's a little more buff in the front end. I was just too lazy to retake the photos.
